WFF believes solving global problems such as devastating childbirth injuries requires a commitment to collaborate with, support and develop local leaders like Dr. Itengré Ouédraogo.
WFF originally recruited Dr. Itengré for the Chief Medical Officer position at Danja Fistula Center in Niger. From 2012 – 2013, WFF Clinical Consultant, Dr. Steve Arrowsmith, provided Dr. Itengré specialized International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) fistula training. Dr. Itengré became the only FIGO trained fistula surgeon in Niger.
Building Holistic Care
In late 2017 and after six years of dedicated service, Dr. Itengré left DFC Niger to launch WFF programming in his home country of Burkina Faso where he established the local nonprofit ARENA. WFF funds and works closely with Dr. Itengré and ARENA to develop holistic fistula treatment, prevention education and economic empowerment programming for women in Burkina Faso.
From 2017 – 2018, ARENA worked with multiple local partners to provide free fistula surgeries through organized camps. ARENA partnered with Fondation Rama to provide survivors social reintegration & empowerment programming following treatment. Beginning in 2019, ARENA and WFF provided prevention education, free fistula surgeries and social reintegration and empowerment training through a continuous, year-round treatment model.
