Artist Inspired to Help Women with Fistula
January 10, 2019
After reading “Half the Sky,” Caroline, an artist, had to do something.
She decided to create portraits of women with fistula and vowed to donate 50% of the sale price. She just sold this portrait of Maheena and made a donation to Worldwide Fistula Fund! Caroline shared Maheena’s story:
Maheena, a 31-year-old Maasai woman from Kenya, is the mother of 5 children. Maheena developed her fistula while trying to deliver her 6th child, who was stillborn. Because of the fistula, Maheena leaked urine uncontrollably after labor, but her husband wouldn’t let her suffer. He carried Maheena on his back all the way from Kenya to Tanzania for treatment.
Maheena received free fistula surgery at Bugando Medical Centre in Tanzania through our partnership! Maheena was dry again!
If you’ve been inspired to help women like Maheena and are looking for ways to give back, take a look at our “What You Can Do” page for ideas!
Maheena’s story was told to Caroline by the photographer, Dorthe Pedersen, who took the picture upon which this painting is based. Caroline vowed to donate 50% of the painting’s sale price to the organization to which Pedersen was connected, One By One. The donation was made to WFF, the organization OBO merged with in 2018.
