Michael Wittek of rural Lake City has been appointed chair of the Worldwide Fistula Fund (WFF) board. WFF is a nonprofit working to prevent and treat a common and debilitative childbirth injury to women and girls in sub-Saharan Africa. Among the services they provide are surgical care, rehabilitation, literacy and vocational classes, and training for African doctors on fistula prevention and treatment.
Wittek first joined the board of directors in 2012, according to a press release. Before that he managed health benefits for a global computer firm. Later he worked at Medtronic. Now in semi-retirement, Wittek grows cold-hardy grapes for local wineries.
